How custom jewelry is made
From first sketch to final polish.
Five steps, one team, no outside hand-offs. You’ll watch your custom design take shape at every stage — and you can make changes before any metal is cast.

01
The Consultation
Bring a photo, a Pinterest board, a family stone, or simply a feeling. We’ll talk through style, stone, and budget, sketch ideas together, and give you a clear quote.
About 90 minutes · In our Milford shop

02
CAD Design
Your sketch becomes a precise 3D model and a photo-real rendering. Thinner band? Different halo? This is where we refine every detail together until it feels just right.
Revisions welcome

03
Wax & Try-On
We create a wax model of your design so you can hold it, slip it on, and see it on your hand before any metal is cast.
Hold it before it’s gold

04
Casting & Setting
Your piece is cast in the metal you chose, then finished at the bench by our jewelers. Each stone is set by hand, with care and precision, right here in our shop.
Set by hand, in-house

05
Finishing & Inspection
Each piece is polished by hand, with optional hand engraving for a personal touch. Joe Kirk gives every piece a final inspection before the best part: placing it in your hands.
Final check by Joe Kirk
Typically 8 to 12 weeks, start to finish.

Why Kirk & Co.
Custom is where we started. It’s still the heart of what we do.
Kirk & Co began in 1986 as Cincinnati Goldsmiths, a trade shop crafting fine jewelry for other jewelers. That bench experience shapes every piece we make today. When you design with us, you sit across from the designers and gemologists who will help shape your vision, from the first sketch to the final design. From there, it goes to our bench jewelers, who make your custom piece, right here in Milford.
Made in Milford
Design, CAD, wax, casting, setting, and engraving all happen in our Milford shop, by our own team. You approve every step before we move to the next.
See it before it’s real
Photo-real CAD renderings and a wax model you can try on let you see and feel your piece before the metal is ever poured.
Stones chosen in person
Our team hand-selects our natural diamonds for cut, color, and brilliance. Prefer lab-grown? We carry those too, and we’ll show you both side by side so you can choose what feels right.
Inspected by Joe Kirk
Every custom piece receives a final inspection by Joe before it’s placed in your hands.

The diamond
Hand-selected. Forged in Milford.
Our gemologists choose each diamond one at a time, with your design in mind. We look closely at cut, color, clarity, and the way each stone catches the light, and we’ll walk you through every option so you can choose with confidence.
Natural diamonds
Formed deep within the earth over billions of years. Rare, timeless, and the traditional heirloom choice.

Our story
Before there was a showroom, there was a bench.
In 1986, Dan and Rose Kirk founded Cincinnati Goldsmiths, Inc., a trade shop crafting jewelry for other jewelers. As the business grew, they moved to Batesville, Indiana, and reopened as Kirk & Company, a retail store that sold, designed, and repaired jewelry.
In 2001, Joe Kirk joined the family business and began training as a goldsmith, learning jewelry repair, diamond setting, and hand engraving. Today, our jewelers, designers, goldsmiths, diamond setters, and gemologist understand every facet of designing, making, and repairing jewelry. We do it all, and we do it all well.
“The best sound in jewelry is when a customer is speechless.”

Custom jewelry FAQs
Good questions. Honest answers.
Still wondering about something? Call or text us at (513) 575-5475 — we’re always happy to help.
Can I use my own diamond or a family heirloom in a custom piece?
Yes. Many of our custom projects start with a stone or piece a client already owns. We will evaluate the stone, recommend how to best feature it, and walk you through what is possible.
Does a custom piece come with a warranty?
Custom pieces built entirely from new components qualify for a Jewelers Mutual Care Plan. Because heirloom materials cannot be certified as new, pieces that incorporate a family stone or existing jewelry do not qualify. Ask us for details at your consultation.
How long does a custom piece take to complete?
Most custom pieces are ready in 8 to 10 weeks. Full custom work involving an heirloom stone or restoration can take up to 12 weeks, given the additional care those pieces require.
Do I need an appointment to start a custom project?
An appointment gives you dedicated one on one time with a design specialist, but you are always welcome to stop in with questions or start browsing our custom gallery for inspiration.
How much does a custom piece cost?
Every custom piece is different, so we start by talking through your budget with you. From there, your design specialist will present a range of options for metals, stones, and design details that fit what you want to spend, so you always know what to expect before any work begins.
Can I make changes once the process has started?
Yes. The CAD design and wax stages exist specifically so you can review your piece and make adjustments before it is cast in metal.
