That is exactly the right approach. You may be deciding between:

Most people are not certain what they want when they walk in. By the end of the first appointment, which usually takes about an hour, they have a much clearer sense.
Choosing the diamond
The stone usually drives the design.
We educate to inform, not to sell. Here is what we help you think through, with real diamonds in hand.
- Shape
Round brilliants are the most popular because their cut maximizes light return. Ovals, cushions, emerald cuts, and pears each have their own personality, often tied to the wearer’s style.
- Cut
The single biggest driver of how a diamond looks. A well-cut diamond can look larger than its carat weight. We will show you the difference in person, and it is dramatic.
- Color
Natural diamonds are graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow); lab grown diamonds use GIA’s Premium and Standard. Most engagement rings sit in the near-colorless range for the best value.
- Clarity
For most engagement rings, an eye-clean stone, with no inclusions visible to the naked eye, is the right target. You do not need to pay for flawless.
- Carat
Carat is weight, not size. A well-cut 1.0 carat diamond can look larger than a poorly cut 1.25 carat. We help you balance it with the other Cs.

Much of our engagement ring work is custom. We start wherever you are: a vague idea, a Pinterest board, an heirloom diamond, or a fully developed vision.
- Consultation, where we listen and ask questions

- CAD rendering, so you can see the design in 3D first

Plan for 8 to 10 weeks from first design to completion. If you have a date in mind, tell us early so we can build the timeline around it.
How to think about budget
There is no rule.
The old “two months’ salary” guideline was a 1940s ad campaign, not a financial principle. The right budget is the one that feels right for you.
We help you get the most from the budget you set, showing you in person what it buys and which trade-offs between size, quality, and design you are comfortable with. Financing is available for those who prefer it.
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see most often.
- Focusing only on carat. A well-cut 0.9 carat often looks better than a poorly cut 1.1.
- Buying sight unseen. Photos and certificates do not show how a diamond actually looks.
- Skipping the setting conversation. A stunning diamond in a flimsy setting will not last.
- Rushing the timeline. A custom ring rushed in three weeks may not be the ring it could be in eight.
- Forgetting about resizing. Most rings need it at some point. Make it part of the conversation.
Should you involve your partner?
There is no single right answer.
This question comes up in almost every appointment. Most clients take one of three approaches:
- A complete surprise. You know their style and handle the full design yourself.
- Together from the start. The proposal is the surprise, not the ring, so the wearer is sure to love it.
- A middle ground. You gather input on style and shape ahead of time, then finalize the design on your own.

After the proposal
We are here for what comes next.
If the ring needs resizing, we handle it in-house at our Milford store. When it is time for wedding bands, we can pair one to the engagement ring or design them together from the start, which often makes for the cleanest fit.
We also recommend bringing the ring in every six months for a complimentary cleaning and inspection, so we can check the prongs, address any wear, and clean the stone properly.

How do I choose the right engagement ring?
Start with what you know: your partner’s style, whether they prefer simple or detailed, and whether they would want a surprise or to be involved. From there, we help you narrow your options through diamond selection, setting choice, and, if you like, custom design.
Should I choose a lab grown or natural diamond?
Both are real diamonds and both are common choices. Natural diamonds offer origin, rarity, and have historically held their value better. Lab grown diamonds offer a larger size or higher quality for the same budget, but generally do not hold their value. We help you compare both in person.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
There is no fixed rule. The right budget depends on your priorities and your situation. We show you what different price points buy in person, so you can decide without pressure.
How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Plan for 8 to 10 weeks from initial consultation to completion. That allows time for design, stone selection, production, setting, and finishing. If you have a date in mind, start as early as you can.
Can I use a diamond or piece of jewelry I already have?
Yes. Heirloom diamonds and inherited pieces are part of much of our custom work. We can evaluate the stone, design a new setting around it, or include it in a redesign.
Do I need to know my partner’s ring size?
It helps, but it is not required. We can estimate from other information, and resizing can be done after the proposal if needed.
What if I don’t know exactly what I want?
That is normal. Most clients do not. Your first appointment is about exploring, not deciding. The answers usually emerge as you see options in person.
What should I prioritize when choosing a diamond?
Cut quality, because it affects how the diamond looks more than any other factor. After cut, prioritize what matters most to you: size, color, clarity, or origin.
What happens after I choose the ring?
For custom rings, we move into the 8 to 10 week build. For in-stock or ready-to-customize options, the timeline is shorter. We keep you updated, and when the ring is ready, we walk through it with you before you take it home.
