Diamond engagement rings

Diamond Engagement Rings

An engagement ring is not just a purchase. It is a promise made tangible.

At Kirk & Company Jewelers, we approach engagement rings with the seriousness they deserve. We have been in business since 1991 and in Milford since 2007. We are a third-generation, family-owned jewelry store with a team of designers, gemologists, and goldsmiths who understand what goes into a ring that will be worn for a lifetime.

If you are in the early stages of looking, we are happy to be your first stop. We do not pressure. We educate, we guide, and we let the work speak for itself.

We serve clients in Milford, Madeira, Indian Hill, Mason, Loveland, and across the greater Cincinnati area.

Where to Start

Most clients come in with questions, not decisions. That is exactly the right approach.

You may be deciding between:

Lab grown or natural diamonds

Different diamond shapes (round, oval, princess, emerald, cushion, pear, marquise)

Different settings (solitaire, halo, three stone, side stone, pavé)

A ready-to-customize setting from our collection, or a fully custom design

Most people are not certain what they want when they walk in. By the end of the appointment, they usually have a much clearer sense.

Choosing the Diamond

The diamond is usually the part of the ring that drives the overall design. We help you think through:

[H3] Shape

Round brilliant diamonds are the most popular for engagement rings because their cut maximizes light return. Ovals, cushions, emerald cuts, and pear shapes each have a distinct personality. The right shape often relates to the wearer's existing style.

[H3] Cut quality

Cut quality is the single biggest driver of how a diamond looks. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully and can appear larger than its carat weight suggests. We will show you the difference between an excellent cut and a fair cut in person. The contrast is dramatic.

[H3] Color

Color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow) for natural diamonds. For lab grown diamonds, GIA now uses Premium and Standard descriptors. Most engagement rings sit in the near-colorless range, where the stone looks white face up but offers more value than a top-color stone.

[H3] Clarity

Clarity refers to internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface characteristics (blemishes). For most engagement rings, an eye-clean stone (one where inclusions are not visible to the naked eye) is the right target. You do not need to pay for flawless.

[H3] Carat weight

Carat is weight, not size. A well-cut 1.0 carat diamond can look larger than a poorly cut 1.25 carat. We help you balance carat weight with the other Cs to get the best-looking stone for your budget.

Choosing the Setting

Once the diamond is selected, the setting becomes the next design decision.

[H3] Solitaire

A single center diamond on a simple band. Clean, classic, timeless. Lets the diamond do all the talking.

[H3] Halo

A center diamond surrounded by a circle of smaller diamonds. Adds sparkle and can make the center stone look larger.

[H3] Three Stone

A center diamond with two side stones. Often interpreted as "past, present, and future." Side stones can be diamonds or colored stones such as sapphire or ruby.

[H3] Side Stone and Pavé

A center diamond with diamonds set along the band. Adds brilliance and detail without dominating the design.

[H3] Vintage and Antique

Settings inspired by Art Deco, Edwardian, or Victorian eras. Often feature milgrain, filigree, and detailed metalwork.

[H3] Fully Custom

You bring an idea, a sketch, an inspiration, or even a piece of jewelry from a grandmother. We design from there. This is often where the most meaningful rings come from.

Custom Engagement Rings

A significant portion of our engagement ring work is custom. We design from your starting point, whether that is a vague idea, a Pinterest board, an heirloom diamond, or a fully developed vision.

The process typically goes:

1. Consultation, where we listen and ask questions

2. Sketch and concept development

3. CAD rendering, so you can see the design in 3D before it is made

4. Approval and refinement

5. Production

6. Setting

7. Final polish and quality check

8. Pickup

We recommend planning 8 to 10 weeks for a custom engagement ring from initial design to completion. If you have a specific date in mind, tell us early so we can build the timeline accordingly.

How to Think About Budget

There is no rule about what to spend. The old "two months' salary" guideline was a marketing campaign from the 1940s, not a financial principle. The right budget is the one that feels right for you and your situation.

What we will help you do is maximize the budget you set. Within any budget, there are trade-offs between size, quality, and design complexity. We will show you what your budget actually buys, in person, so you can decide which trade-offs you are comfortable with.

We accept all major payment methods and offer financing for those who prefer it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

We see the same handful of mistakes again and again. The big ones:

Focusing only on carat size. A well-cut 0.9 carat diamond often looks better than a poorly cut 1.1 carat.

Buying without seeing the stone in person. Online photos and certificates do not tell you how a diamond actually looks.

Skipping the setting conversation. A stunning diamond in a flimsy setting will not last.

Rushing the timeline. A custom ring rushed in three weeks may not be the same ring it could have been in eight.

Not asking about resizing and adjustment. Most rings will need to be resized at some point. Make sure that is part of the conversation.

We help every client avoid these pitfalls without making it feel like a lecture.

Should You Involve Your Partner?

This question comes up in almost every appointment. There is no single right answer.

Some clients prefer to keep the ring a complete surprise. They have a strong sense of their partner's style and want to handle the full design themselves.

Other clients involve their partner from the start. They make the proposal the surprise, not the ring. This approach often produces a ring the wearer is sure to love.

A middle ground is common. The proposer gathers input ahead of time, then finalizes the design alone. Or the partner is consulted on style and shape, but the final design remains a surprise.

We can guide you through any of these approaches. If you are uncertain, we will help you figure out which one fits your relationship.

What Happens After the Proposal

If you need a resize, we handle that in-house at our Milford store. If you want to add a wedding band, we can pair one to the engagement ring, or develop them together from the start (which often makes for the cleanest fit).

We also offer ongoing cleaning and inspection for the pieces we sell. We recommend bringing the ring in twice a year so we can check the prongs, address any wear, and clean the stone properly.

Schedule Your Appointment

The best way to start is to come in and talk. We will walk you through your options, show you diamonds in person, and help you understand what you are looking at. The first appointment usually takes about an hour.
