Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds are formed beneath the earth's surface over one to three billion years. They are rare. They are distinctive. They have anchored the fine jewelry industry for generations.

For many of our clients, a natural diamond is the right choice because it carries something a lab cannot replicate: time.

At Kirk & Company Jewelers, we help clients select natural diamonds the way we help with everything else. Clearly. Calmly. Without pressure. We have been in business since 1991, and we have called Milford, Ohio home since 2007. We are a third-generation, family-owned jewelry store.

We serve clients in Milford, Madeira, Indian Hill, Mason, Loveland, and across the greater Cincinnati area.

What a Natural Diamond Actually Is

A natural diamond is a mineral made of pure crystalline carbon, formed in the earth's mantle under extreme pressure and heat over a period that can range from one to three billion years. It is then carried toward the surface through geological activity and eventually mined.

Every natural diamond is shaped by its specific conditions of formation, which is why no two are exactly alike. Inclusions, crystal patterns, and color characteristics all vary stone to stone. That individuality is part of what gives natural diamonds their long-standing place in fine jewelry.

Why Clients Choose Natural Diamonds

There is no single reason. The most common ones we hear in our store:

  • Tradition matters. The client wants the same kind of diamond their parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents had.
  • Heirloom potential. They want a piece that will be passed down, and they feel that origin contributes to that meaning.
  • Long-term value. Natural diamonds retain value, which matters if you ever want to trade up to a larger natural diamond for an anniversary or pass the piece down.
  • Origin matters. They want a stone that formed in the earth, not in a chamber.
  • It just feels right. Sometimes the reason is not articulated, and that is fine.

We do not advocate for one type over another. We help you understand the trade-offs so the choice feels like yours.sourcing.

How We Guide You Through Selection

When you come in to look at natural diamonds, we work through the same framework with every client.

The 4Cs

Cut, color, clarity, and carat weight are the universal standards for evaluating diamond quality. Cut quality is the biggest single driver of how a diamond looks in real life. During your appointment, we will show you how cut quality changes the way a diamond looks in person, comparing stones from our inventory so you can see the differences for yourself.

Stone in Hand

We do not work from a screen. We pull diamonds, set them on a paper, and let you see them in the same light you will wear them in. You will see how the same color grade can look different in different stones, and how cut quality can make a smaller diamond look larger and more brilliant than a bigger, duller one.

How It Will Be Set

A diamond is only as good as the setting that supports it. We discuss setting from the beginning because a stone that looks great loose may behave differently in certain mountings. Our team of designers and goldsmiths can talk through how the stone will perform in any style you are considering.

GIA Grading and Certification

Most of the natural diamonds we sell come with grading reports from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or other respected laboratories. A GIA report documents the diamond's exact 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat weight), along with polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and any treatments.

We walk you through the report during your appointment so you understand what you are buying. A grading report is not a marketing document. It is a precise description of what you are looking at.

Natural Diamonds in Custom Jewelry

A natural diamond pairs beautifully with custom design. We use natural diamonds in:
Custom engagement rings (often paired with sapphire or ruby accents)
Wedding bands and anniversary rings
Heirloom redesigns, where we incorporate diamonds you already own
Pendants, earrings, and bracelets designed around the stone

Our designers work with you to develop the right setting from the start. Because the people who help you select the diamond also understand its setting requirements, the diamond and the design move forward together.

Caring for a Natural Diamond

Natural diamonds are extraordinarily hard (10 on the Mohs scale), but they are not indestructible. Settings loosen. Prongs wear. Daily wear can dull a diamond's brilliance through buildup of skin oils, lotion, and dust.

We recommend bringing your diamond jewelry in twice a year for cleaning and inspection. Our jewelers handle prong tightening, prong repair, and ring resizing in-house at our Milford store. Between visits, you can clean the stone gently at home with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush.

Service and Support

Our care does not end at purchase. We offer ongoing cleaning, inspection, prong repair, and resizing for the pieces we sell, all handled in-house at our Milford store.

If your diamond needs attention years down the road, we are here for it.

Schedule a Diamond Consultation

The clearest way to choose a diamond is to see one in person. Side by side with another. Set against your skin tone, your finger, your style.
